Even before I pressed play on my laptop and tablet, my heartstrings were being wrung apart by this drama. Kimi no Todoke begins with us witnessing the every day woes suffered by Sawako Kuronuma for no reason other than her name and her appearance looking similar to Sadako – the malevolent spirit from popular horror franchise of The Ring. No matter what she does she always felt estranged, disconnected, an outsider.

That is, until she meets the handsome and popular Shota Kazehaya on the first day of high school – a boy who for the first time actually treats her like a normal person. Emboldened by his kindness and warmth, Sawako comes to grow into her own and starts to build a healthy & fulfilling social life. However, high school life seldom stays peaceful for long. New social anxieties and pressures test Sawako and Shota in both their friendship and a budding romance.

Kimi no Todoke a both a heartwarming and heartbreaking story because we’ve have all been where Sawako has been. High school life is tough, messy, and confusing – especially for those who are as shy, timid, and misunderstood as her. However, in spite of this, Kimi no Todoke succeeds in painting both a realistic and a healthy relationship due to smart pacing and well-developed character building. Also, the soundtrack is so bloody beautiful!

Moral of the story –  there will be tons of happy and sad-crying that only be remedied with tissues and cuddling for comfort.

Kimi ni Todoke is available for streaming on Crunchyroll and Hulu.
